Wu Dacheng was a famous incorruptible official of the late Qing Dynasty, who has a great influence both in modern Chinese politics and military affairs. What is more, he was also a calligrapher, a painter, a collector, an archeologist, and an expert on palaeography. He collected kinds of antiques and put them in order, distinguished inscriptions on bronzes, wrote academic works and made them published. In this way, he did a lot to propagate archaeological knowledge and made a great contribution to Chinese civilization. He made ink rubbings of the inscriptions on bronzes by himself, collected and compiled the figures and the ink rubbings of the bronzes, then, he wrote Archaeological Collections in Kezhai and other books about inscriptions on bronzes. He also collected many ancient seals and jades, then, edited several seal dictionaries and the famous Gu Yu Tu Kao. After study palaeography and the historical social system for years, he published several academic works, and made other researchers more convenient to work.For Wu Dacheng's outstanding archaeological propagating achievements, this thesis is taking his theory of archaeological propagation and his kinds of academic works as the theory bases. Firstly, he collected great amount of ancient records, and made them published. His most outstanding work in this area is the reseach in JinWen, the inscriptions on bronzes, also his great work Kezhai Ji Gu Lu, a comprehensive expression in that times. What is more, he was diligent in writing books on other kinds of archaeological knowledge, and left us many precious cultural heritages, though some vanished. Secondly, through his famous works, such as Shuowen Guzhou Bu, Zi Shuo, Gu Yu Tu Kao, he researched in the ancient Chinese charactes and social systems. The significance of exploration is great. And then, this thesis made generalizations and conclusions on Wu Dacheng's thoughts and specific practice on propagating archaeological knowledge.This thesis will be very helpful for the deeper research works, such as objective evaluation of Wu Dacheng himself, his contribution to the culture propagation, his important position in archeology and palaeography of modern China.
