Over a century,'Dacheng Wu received a mixed assessment of his political career;but his achievements were undisputable in painting and calligraphy, inscriptions on ancient bronzes and stone tablets, and explanations of words in ancient books.Ke Zhai Shou Ze(??????)collected Dacheng's manuscripts from his adolescence to old age, which was divided into two parts-reading notes and miscellany of inscriptions on bronzes and stone tablets. The first part recorded his understanding and interpretation on some ancient classical texts;and the second part was some drafts of explanation, discrimination and analysis of ancient characters,in which he copied Jijin Words,Qin and Han dynasties tiles and Quanliang(a kind of metal objects used to measure weight),recorded some steles, and collected a catalog of ancient seals.Due to its multitudinousness and large time span, this manuscript was imperative in studying Dacheng Wu and relevant subjects. From the perspective of calligraphy,Ke Zhai Shou Ze exhibited both form&content and style&interest in a new and special way.The find of this manuscript was not only a complement to the existing research on his life story, but also a significant material in the discussion about the evolvement of his calligraphic style. From Ke Zhai Shou Ze,we could easily catch a glimpse of his life, which is plentiful, busy, rigorous and eager for.learning;and we cannot help being full of emotional thoughts about his interesting life, great knowledge and political accomplishment, while he experienced a stage of declasse life in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895.This paper analyzed numerous refreshing styles of his handwriting in Ke Zhai Shou Ze,including all kinds of stereotyped writing, reading notes in small running and cursive script, and sketches of inscriptions on ancient bronzes and stone tablets. And the paper tried to explore and judge when and why his calligraphic styles formed and the relationship between his daily life, official career, learning experience and calligraphic styles.
