Nakajima Atsushi brims with talent but suffers many setbacks during his life. He experienced the divorce of parents, loss of families, bother of diseases, misfortune of careers and other tortures during his brief life, but these tragic experiences influenced greatly on his special outlooks on life and values. Further more, Japan fell into the morass of warfare in 1940's, the militarism clamoured the whole country, the society was thrown into a confusion and popular anxiety, the literature world was also in"darkness", pure literature had no developable room, Nakajima Atsushi who concentrated on literature, was deeply depressed because of the effects of the era as well.A series of works with particular characteristics of Nakajima Atsushi were born, under the influences of the various factors above. We can feel the same ting through these works, although they had different forms. People felt uncertain and anxious about existence, they felt lonely and had no choice about their fates, these feelings ran through the works like a length of red thread. His early works gave prominence to this thought. Nakajima Atsushi made a vivid and incisive inner description in his works such as"Lang Ji Ji","The Diary of Chameleon"and the like, but he didn't escape from the metaphysical anxiety at last.As a writer, he couldn't satisfy with the pure self discription gradually, he put his eyes on the wide historical stage of China, in order to make a breakthrough on his works. He created a series of works on Chinese classic subjects, appling his deep sinological accumulation,"TheStory of the Mountain Moon"and"The Li Mausoleum"were representatives. In his later works, he was concerned about the malice and unfairness of fate, although he was still vexed at the metaphysical thoughts, the forms of the torments had come to the external from the inner. People had no resistence at all facing with the hostility of lot, but acceptance and submission. Even the rational figures were just a kind of resistence and endeavor of the writer facing with the malice of fates. Although the thoughts expressed in the works of Nakajima had negtive aspects, the anxiety and confusion embodied in his works was the mirror of the soul of the intelligentsia at that time, his works caused wide echos. This paper started with the themes of Nakajima's works, in order to analyse the state of existence and the course of soul expressed through works of the intelligentsia represented by Nakajima, and to give some enlightenments and ponderation to the younger generation.
