Hermeneuties is an ancient and modern subject. The hermeneuticidea of understanding has become multidimensional and relative, notunique and absolute any more.Hermeneutics is 'a philosophy of understanding'. Since ancienttimes, the Hermeneutic idea of understanding has a profound impact ontranslation. In the 20th century, George Steiner put forward the statementof 'understanding as translation', based on the modern hermeneutics.Steiner reveals the close relationship between translation studies andhermeneutics and brings a new perspective for studying the essence oftranslation. Steiner also proposed "hermeneutic motion" which provides anew idea and analytical methods for translation studies. This thesis attempts to give a comprehensive review of thedevelopment of hermeneutics, find the clues of the evolution of'understanding', and analyze the key points, such as, the relation betweenlanguage and the world, fore-understanding and "fusion of horizons", inorder to prove that the essence of translation is understanding. From theperspective of hermeneuties, this thesis takes the translations of the poem—Lu Zhai written by the poet Wang Wei of the Tang Dynasty as anexample, analyzes the translations according to the different focuses:versification, theme and way of description, and explores the cause of thedifference—the different understandings of ST. It turns out that thehermeneutic idea of understanding sets the direction of translation andprovides a new perspective for poetry translation studies. In recent decades, the researches on hermeneutic translation are increasing rapidly in the West, while grows relatively slow in China. It isimportant and helpful to borrow the advanced hermeneutie translationtheories from the foreign countries for guiding the domestic translationstudies, for setting up the relative system of translation theories in China.
