The grammar of Classical and modern Chinese share common features as wellas differences. In view of language universals, we found that three principles,namely, Identffiability Precedence, Semantic Proximity, Distance-marking Correspondence,etc. that constraint the word order of Modern Chinese could also help to explain thesequencing of Classical Chinese. These principles may work alone; they may alsocompete with each other. It will also be discussed in this dissertation.
