The Research Of The Self-Reference Effect And Different Recall Condition On Directed Forgetting Effect

The self has special influence on memory. The memory willget better effect when it is related with the self. This is namedself reference effect (ab. SRE) by Rogers. The study ofdirected forgetting is another experimental pattern of memorystudy, it is an effective way about thinking control research.This research employs the self-reference effect paradigm andthe list method of directed forgetting, to study the influenceof recall order and self-effect effect on directed forgetting.These findings have important implications for theoryresearch and practical appliance. In theory, they widen thefield of directed forgetting and self-reference effectresearch. In practice, they can help people improve the levelof their memory.This research found that the relation of self-referenceeffect and directed forgetting is multiple,which both theencoding and the recall order have influence on. Now we havefound some results:Experiment 1 showed that within the list method of directedforgetting, the difference between the two processingconditions is revealed that the effect of directed forgetting appears under the self-referential processing condition,whereas not under other-referential processing condition. Thismay suggest that the effect of inhibition due to the instructionof directed forgetting is strong enough for memory materialswith high distinctness under the self-referential processingto produce the directed forgetting effect. participants tendto recall to-be-remembered (R) items before to-be-forgetten(F) items when they can recall items in any order. Theself-reference group has more commendatory items thanderogatory.In Experiment 2, recall order was manipulated (F-R orR-F).The results showed that only the R-F order led to directedforgetting, Finally,These results demonstrate that directedforgetting under the list method hinges on the output order inwhich participants recall the F and R information. Thus, outputorder should be taken into account by researchers investigatingspecific mechanisms that leads to directed forgetting.
