We studied elementary foreign students' transverse development of Chinese phonological awareness by the task of listening and judging. There are two experiments. In Experiment 1, we used the task of auditory presentation to study 37 students' development of Chinese phonological awareness. Results show that students firstly develop tone awareness and syllable-initial consonant awareness, syllable-final vowel and consonant awareness is developed lastly. In Experiment 2, we tested 40 students' development of Chinese phonological awareness in the task of audio-visual presentation. Results show that tone awareness is developed firstly, syllable-initial consonant awareness and syllable-final vowel and consonant awareness is developed lastly. The two experiments also show that students' mother tongue difference, types of phonological awareness and task difference will influence foreign students' development of Chinese phonological awareness. In Experiment 1, we also studied foreign students' mastery of difficulty in syllable-initial consonant, syllable-final vowel consonant and tone in the task of auditory presentation, which helps to pay attention to their individual speech sounds and improve speech sounds teaching as a second language.
