Phonological awareness is the conscious access to the random levels of the speech stream, and some ability to manipulate cognitively representations at these levels. The research about this topic can go back to 1960's. Over the past two decades, but particularly the last 10 years, there has been burgeoning consensus about the critical importance of phonological awareness to beginning reading success, and about its role in specific reading disability or dyslexia.Since the research of Su Hua in 1996, most concerns has been given about phonological awareness in our country. But most research are concerned about the different development between Chinese children and children with other alphabetic language. The study about Chinese learning English as second language is infrequence. The reason is that the study about the phonological awareness is still at the beginning stage, without a standard phonological awareness test. Most studies used the self-made tests. That make the studies can't compare with each other. Based on the summarization about the related theory, this study compiled the test for the middle school students' phonological awareness. Through this study, we want to discuss the difference between the middle school students' grade, sex and reading level. The study shows that:(1) The Middle school's Phonological Awareness Test in our study has good reliability and validity.(2) The phonological awareness development of the middle school students are similar with the other studies, the development of rhythm awareness is ahead of phonemic awareness.(3) There are remarkable differences between grades.
