War and death is not only the inevitable destiny of mankind, but also a significant theme in literature. War literature has shown the awareness of death, which is a mirror of human spirit. This paper is based on the awareness of death in Chinese contemporary novels on war. Through theories of culture of death and cultures of war originated from the East to the West, the author presents specific analyses of Chinese literature works and their authors, so as to define death and literature, as well as their relations with the fate of the human spirit. And the author also presents a personal perspective of mental perplexity and ponders over rebuilding the ecosystem of the human spirit.This paper mainly explores the richness of consciousness towards death in contemporary Chinese war novels in three aspects—background development, narrative angel and the aesthetic significance. In the quest of seeking the answer to wars and death—two greatest human mysteries and in the outlook to the future of war literature, the author advocates an ecological attitude towards war-related phenomena. That is to rescue human spiritual crisis with the redemption of individual spirit, to ease the tension within the mental world with the weapon of literature and to respond the inevitable wars and death with detached mentalities so that it would unleash the blossom of the human spirit in the bloodshed of wars and death.
