| As a concept and theme repeatedly discussed and interpreted on the contemporary Chinese literary arena,"humanism"has always been drawing heated controversy. The origination of humanism in contemporary Chinese literature has been coming along with the various imaginations of human beings in the course of China's modernization. Be it human nature, individual freedom or the cultural property of mankind, they have all been carrying on humanism's imagination of human beings since the May 4th Movement. As a specific area of theoretical pursuit, humanism is gradually exerting influence upon the stereotyped ideology of researchers as they are considering the problem of how to readjust the basic relations between individual and nation, and between individual and culture. This is why I chose to dedicate this paper to the inquiry of humanism's discourse in contemporary China. After sorting out the ambiguous representations of humanism in China's contemporary literary scene, this paper finds three evident trends in the composition of contemporary humanism's discourse, that is, Marxist humanism, literalistic humanism, conservatistic humanism. With the Chinese society being deeply influenced by western modernity, a number of social problems have arisen in the course of the country's modernization. The three discourses of humanism have all attempted to solve the problem of modernity. While devoting efforts to different aspects of the narrative system, the three discourses have in a complementary way created the narrative strategy of contemporary Chinese humanism. |
