A Study On Shituo's Style Of Novels

Shituo is an outstanding novelist in modern China, however, frequently misinterpreted. Moreover, he, with conscious style sense, is a novel genre creator. During the turbulent and unstable writing career, he is persistent to try to write in different styles and skills, creates various novels texts of peculiar types and establishes his own gorgeous and varied modes. In compliment of this, the thesis, beginning with Shituo's novel styles, tries to adopt the stylistics theories of literature criticism in order to make an analysis of his texts, to study the language, narration, genres, and context of situation consisting of these styles. Therefore, we can definite the characteristic of his novels precisely.Besides preface and conclusion, the thesis includes four parts. The first section analyses the language function of Shituo's novels and illuminates the intermixed language strategies. First of all, Shituo widely uses the language of Storytelling with strong narrative feature: the dialogues with direct speech give an impetus to plot; the emotionalized argument performs his intellectual philosophical thought; the interrogative language is used to make his self-examination and communicate with readers. Secondly, hidden sharp point of jocosity speech expresses novelist's satire and jeer in amusing context. Last but not least, the"digressive style"which separated from principal plot, adjusts the narrative rhythm and adds appeal to the language. The second section reviews the narrative forms of Shituo's novels and discusses novelist's pluralistic narrative techniques. With regard to arrangement of narrative time, Shituo depends on personal time to recombine the past and the present through the retrospective narration. With memorizing attitude, he displays his reflection on the matter of humanity, life and social historical culture. In terms of choices of narrative point of view, the utilization of multi-narrative points of view and sounds is to make a cubical complex focus and emphasis towards the same subject, as brings multidimensional comparative narrative effect. The third section confers about the genre feature of Shituo's novels and observes the containing characteristic of the style. In his most representative three categories works: the novel of imitating pastoral genre stems from western lyric pastoral under the influence of realistic thought in the literary arena at that time; Historical biographical style novel carries on the traditional Chinese writing method to describe the image and write the biography for deeply implicated fictional characters; Satire genre novel benefits from the witty and pregnant tradition of the classical satirical poem. These are the unique and brilliant genres created by Shituo after he inherits and combines different genres at all time and in all over the world. The fourth section expounds the context of situation consisting Shituo's novel styles. It tries to perform the relationship between his novel styles and the social culture connotation and the writer's psychological implication restricted by this connotation. His creation of novels both experiences the time of Beijing Period under the influence of the Left-wing Literature and the Beijing School Literature and Shanghai Period beneath the grief and worried situation of downfall of the nation. Finally Shituo's novels possess intermixed, pluralistic and containing styles by his different psychology in different context of situation.Shituo's graceful and multiple literature world is just founded by creating new genres and styles. As a persistent and creative novelist, his exploration and new changes of novel styles have constructive meaning. His unique style creation breaks through fixed thinking of novel system monism, enriches the present forms of novel categories, engenders a positive trend for the development of Chinese modern novel style, supplies Chinese modern literature with an imperfect but full of vital force.
