Yang Yiqing was a famous politician in the Ming dynasty. Accordingly, as recorded in"Ming Shi", he was considered as a genius who showed competence for both polite letters and martial arts. He continuously worked as an officer in the government for nearly half century. When he was appointed to join the Cabinet for the second time, based on the trusts from the emperor, supported by the officials, Yang made great contribution to the Ming dynasty in officials'selection, social governance, armaments preparation, border defense, domestic security, putting down of rebellions, classes'coherent, which decelerated the falling down of Imperil."Jiajin New policies"and"Great Li"were the history background of Yang Yiqing's joining to the Cabinet, and they were also the history background of all the political activities in Jiajing times. They influenced each other."Jiajin Reforms"aimed to remove the accumulated maladies so that to realize social harmonious. From the 16th year of'Zheng De',"Jiajin New policies"were carried out steps by steps after the death of Wu Zong Emperor of Ming dynasty."Jiajin New policies"had narrow and wide definitions. The narrow definitions refers to"Yang Tinghe reform", while the wide one means the series reforms of five terms of primary secretaries one by another from Yang Tinghe to Fei Hong, YangYiqing, Zhang cong and Gui E, to deal with maladies. Yang Yiqing was a key primary secretary to the continuous of the reforms. He was conservative and made stable policies. He represented the principles and ideas of the group of civil officials but he failed finally because of the self-defect of this group. Yang Yiqing, together with upstart officers through"Great Li", worked to push ahead the reforms after the leaving of Yang Tinghe. However, Yang Yiqing and those men had distinguished personalities and represented for different interest-groups, further more they all looked forward to make the primary secretary. Finally, Yang Yiqing broke off their relations. After the two-year-struggle of the 7th and the 8th year of the Jiajing times, under the strikes of upstart officers, Yang Yiqing failed in politics for being sentenced as"bribery", and died later. The key point of the upstart officers'victory may not be the traditionally thought as the efforts that Huo Tao impeached Yang Yiqing twice, but the three secret letters from Fang Xianfu. It is also important to note that, the Si Zong emperor was sensitive to the party-struggles. The so called"bribery" was a groundless accusation, but the excuse for the emperor to make politics balance. Yang Yiqing was a victim of the contests of rights and advantages. |
