The Formation And Practice Of Emperor Sui's "great Unity" Thinking

The key point of this paper is the idea of great national unity discussing systematically and in depth the origin of this idea of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty and how this influenced Sui Dynasty's national fate.Emperor Yang's idea of great national unity is based on Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty's construction.Emperor Wen's view about “Tian Xia” and his ministers' admonitions had influence Yang a lot.Meanwhile,after Wen's efforts,Sui became stronger and richer than the previous generation which provided a favorable condition to Emperor Yang.Because of more than 300 years separation previously,National strength and the willing of being a great emperor,Emperor Yang formed his own understanding of “unification” and “Tian Xia” which is more abundant and more distinctive than his father Emperor Wen.He hoped to build a dynasty surpassed the passed eras and to make all the people in the world belonging to him.Within thirteen years of reign,he used the idea of great national unity to guide the practice.In this way,almost all the neighboring nationalities paied tribute to Sui including twenty-six nationalities of The Western Regions and more than ten nationalities in the south.Also,he contributed the new capital of Sui,dig the Sui Canal,suppress a rebellion of Tuyuhun,manageThe Western Regions,The Turks and Khitan,three-times-visiting in Jiangnan,three-times-dispatching troops to Gaogouli.These had not only time logic but also spatial logic.We can find out all that he did had a careful planning.His final purpose is the establishment of trans national and trans regional unification which is the the most concentrated and the most direct expression of the idea of great national unity.Although Emperor Yang had to pay a high price for all these achievements which were tyranny,the scale of the "great unification" and the thinking of the relationship between the Central Plains and the frontier nationalities became an effective reference object for later generations.In a word,Emperor Sui's practice of building a "unified" Dynasty is the foundation of the development and final formation of China's multinational country.
