The aim of the study is to carry out critical discourse analysis (CDA) for two news discourses selected from New York Times and Washington Post. And in accordance with the objective of CDA, the dissertation also aims to uncover the ideological assumptions that are hidden in the words of our written text or oral speech in order to resist and overcome various forms of power over or to gain an appreciation that we are exercising"power over,"unbeknownst to us.This dissertation discusses two methods of conducting critical discourse analysis, respectively traditional way, Halliday's systemic-functional grammar(SFG) and cognitive way, cognitive model of news discourse comprehension, developed by the author, together with other relevant cognitive models such as metaphor model and prominence model etc. to analyze news discourse. By doing this, the author attempts to conduct CDA both from the perspective of discourse production and discourse interpretation, that is,to analyze certain written or oral discourse in terms of both writers or speakers and readers or listeners. The methodology adopted in the dissertation is a combination of qualitative and quantitative method, namely, using the data obtained from the designed questionnaire to test the validity of the cognitive model created by the author and the correctness of the hypothesis gained through observation and data collection.During the process of using SFG and cognitive way to practically analyze two pieces of news, the hidden ideology covered by certain linguistic forms is to some extent presented and the cognitive model is further proved to be a feasible method to conduct CDA and to gain better comprehension of news discourse or other forms of discourses.
