Crosstalk is a form of traditional art that frequently produces humorous utterances with strong Chinese characteristics, which is so popular in our society. Its greatest feature is that it uses many kinds of language and non-language to create laughter points.Up to now,the scholars have analyzed the humorous phenomena in crosstalk from rhetoric, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and so on.However,no scholars have explored the causes of humor from the perspective of coherence of humorous texts, and no related articles have systematically discussed “Zagua” in crosstalk, based on which, this paper focuses on “Zagua”(which would be shortened as ZG afterwards),which refers to a means by which crosstalk comedians, under the guidance of the Maxim of Self-elevation and Other-denigration,try to make fun of their partners, peers or others,as a form of constructing “baofu” in crosstalk, which is pertinent and interesting, with a cultural background and significant research value. This paper intends to establish CE Model from the perspective of cognitive linguistics,by integrating Cognitive Reference Point Model(CRP),Event-domain Cognitive Model(ECM)and the pragmatic maxim of Self-elevation and Other-denigration,which will be used to analyze ZG in crosstalk. In this paper,Deyun Club's crosstalk is taken as the research object, from which 100 pieces of humorous dialogues concerning ZG are extracted to establish a closed corpus for the qualitative and quantitative analysis so as to explore the cognitive mechanism of ZG.This essay consists of five chapters, with the main contents of each chapter as follows:The first chapter is an introduction, ranging from the motivation of topic selection, writing objectives, methodology,to the layout. The second chapter is a literature review of the classical theories and modern linguistic researches of humor, crosstalk, and the shortcomings left by their researches.Chapter Three is a theoretical integration.By integrating ECM,CRP and the Maxim of Self-elevation and Other-denigration,CE Model is established, which attempts to complement and improve the previous deficiencies.Chapter Four is corpus analysis.100 pieces of ZG are selected from the crosstalk of Deyun Club to establish a closed corpus, which will be investigated, analyzed and explained in detail with CE Model.Chapter Five is the summary, which summarizes the significance and shortcomings of this study. This paper mainly has the following research significance and findings:(1)This paper attempts to build CE Model based on ECM,CRP and the Maxim of Self-elevation and Other-denigration,which will serve as a theoretical framework to analyze and explain the cognitive mechanism behind ZG in crosstalk. This interpretation of ZG covers not only the hierarchy of events in crosstalk, but also the integration of different event domains. The Maxim of Self-elevation and Other-denigration works as an important pragmatic principle for the generation of ZG.(2)Through the analysis of 100 pieces of ZG in Deyun Club's crosstalk texts,it is found that they can be roughly divided into six categories according to their contents: identity(24%)> ethical relationship(21%)> moral quality(18%)> appearance feature(17%)> ability(11%)> others(9%).Deyun Club's crosstalk is close to people's lives and they often tease others from the perspective of identity and ethical relationship, which is used to mock people's psychological tendency to take advantage of others.(3)According to ECM,conflicts on different levels are distributed as follows: B(43%)> C(27%)> E(13%)> A(10%)> D(7%).For ZG is human-centered,crosstalk actors are inclined to cause conflicts on the level of Being and C,which are strongly productive for the creation of ZG.This paper attempts to explore the generative mechanism of ZG,so that people can better understand how ZG is produced. This paper further verifies the explanatory power of ECM,and hopes to provide some reference for the creation of verbal humor.
