The design to create cultural characteristics are everlasting topic among design field in the trend of globalization and many Chinese designers also work hard on it. For developing national design , it is an inevitably question how to inherit China's fine cultural traditions and create the designs of adapting to contemporary life style in China, and which is the same to the development of living-ceramic design ,as a branch of modern ceramic art. Living-ceramic is a kind of ceramic of combining the artistry and practicality and closely relating to people's life. Whether manual or mechanical shape, it always emphasizes natural artistry and affinity to close to people's appreciation.Based on describing status in quo of living-ceramic home and abroad the author analysed the existing problems on development of living-ceramic in contemporary China and put forward the thought of "unification of Tao and Ware" .As a design thought based on the innovation of traditional culture, "Tao" includes traditional culture, times characteristics and designers' personality. "Ware" denotes "space", which includes material entity space, designers' psychological space and receivers' psychological space.The so-called "unification of Tao and Ware" means combining Tao and Ware intimately and harmoniously. Dynamic space of "Ware" should embody the spirit of ethnic traditional culture, times characteristics and designers' personality .At the same time these spirits can be conveyed through space—as the carrier of "Tao". And this can make "Tao" from immateriality to materiality, from abstract to material ,and realize the harmoniousness between people and ware, people and nature, and different people.So, the author believed that the thought of "unification of Tao and Ware" comparatively accord with the development of living-ceramic design in contemporary China and discussed how to embody the thought of "unification of Tao and Ware" through immitting the thought of "Tao", designing the space of "ware", and releasing intermedium language when designing contemporary living-ceramic. On the other hand ,the author thought that the thought of"unification of Tao and Ware" not only has realistic significance for developing living-ceramic design in contemporary China, but also provides theoretic support for expanding thought of living-ceramic design in contemporary China.
