Oil painting, an imported artistic school in China, is characterized of exotic features. Its growth in China inevitably greets Chinese culture, which, however, is not so much the collision than blending and communication. Chinese oil painting, in light of its current development and under the influence of Xie Yi (Xie Yi literally means freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting, i.e. through concise brushwork, artists capture the image of the objects and manifest their own artistic conceptions), gives a vivid and clear account to the blending. The past century has witnessed the development of Chinese Xie Yi Oil Painting and the three stages it has undergone through. It's noteworthy that since 1980s, concerning artists'notions, temperament and interest, as well as their outputs, Chinese oil painting has been on the track from Xie Shi (artists use brushes to mirror the objects) to Xie Yi. However, according to the different styles, it can be further classified into concrete expression, and image expression. The evolvement of Xie Yi Oil Painting has been under the influence of the spirits of traditional Chinese man of letters and traditional Chinese paintings. In pursuit of simplicity and elegance, self-intoxication and satisfaction, Chinese Xie Yi Oil Painting sheds little light on the portrait of shape. This style, though seemingly bears resemblance to the Expressionism in western arts, still fundamentally differs from that. The root causes are, nevertheless, the infiltration of oriental culture into western oil painting and the difference in aesthetic tastes. The birth of Chinese Xie Yi Oil Painting is predetermined in development of Chinese oil painting, and the meaning of this lies in that it makes the creation of the expression style of the Chinese oil painting possible, and prompts the development of pluralism of Chinese oil painting.
