The Survery Of The Teaching Of Writing To Non-English Majors-Problem Analysis Based On The Survey

In the new century, communication becomes more and more important. English, as an international language and communication tool, is playing an increasingly crucial role in our society. Writing, among the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, is also becoming widely applied and demanding, which attracts more and more concern from both language teachers and students. However, most college students in China are very poor in writing after they have been learning English for nearly ten years. How to help students improve their writing ability is a serious issue which deserves more careful study.With a view to finding out the problem with college English writing, the author conducts a survey on the teaching of writing to non-English majors in ten universities located in three provinces and one municipal city with an aim of investigating the present situation of the teaching and learning of college English writing.Through the survey, the author finds out two glaring problems that should be paid special attention to: the college English writing textbooks and the teaching of writing in college English course. In other word, these two problems reflect the selection of writing textbooks and adoption of certain teaching methods, which are two key parts of teaching practice. Therefore, the author discusses these two problems respectively as well as some suggestions.So this paper mainly focuses on the two problems as well as the solutions to these two problems. Through this illustration, the author presents a clear picture of present situation of writing in college English and hope to contribute to the selection and compilation of college English writing textbooks and the adoption of teaching methods in college English writing which are suitable to Chinese context.
