Ang Lee, Chinese Director of the time, is the only Chinese who was awarded the Best Foreign Film and the Best Director of Oscar. Since 1991, he has shot nine films, including Pushing-hands,The Wedding Banquet,Eat Drink Man Woman,Sense and Sensibility,The Ice Storm,Ride with the devil,Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,Hulk,Brokenback Mountain . He disposed of both Chinese and Western theme well and gained the success in market home and abroad.This thesis takes Ang Lee's movies as a study object, indicating his movies have the character of Chinese and Western Culture Identity. With methods of Film Theory,Narratology Theory and Cultural Studies, it focuses on the "Culture Identity" and analyzes the theme of Family,Love and food culture . Connecting with Lee's cultural background and cultural experience, it explores why and how Lee reaches the identification between Chinese and Western culture.This thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter One analyzes the themes of Ang Lee's movies: father,love and food to discuss why they are the themes of Lee's movies. we study the impact between individual and Family, and the cultural meaning in his films. The reason is rooted in Chinese traditional culture affection and personal experience. Chapter two discusses the narrative strategy. Through the research on Lee's narrative method,narrative structure,details and blankness, we conclude that his movies have the charming of connotation and simplicity. Chapter three explores the design of cinematic presentation. We study the close shot,medium shot,long shot,editing to find out the unique style of Lee's movies.
