For quite a long time, politeness researchers mainly focus on oral communication and the data collected for analysis, most frequently, fragments of daily conversation. Recall statement is closely related to both the writer and the reader. It is not a one-sided product of the writer, but a joint product of both parties during the interaction. Politeness strategies are vital in recall statement writing, different linguistic forms may reflect different degree of politeness.This thesis adopted 10 pieces of recall statements from different World Well-known Big Companies, such as Nokia, Dell and Sony. This dissertation is aimed to analyze the application of politeness strategies in English recall statements. It makes a number of generalizations about the specific linguistic realizations of politeness and how politeness strategies are applied in recall statements.It was found that the politeness model proposed by Brown and Levinson can be extended to the interpretation of the politeness phenomena and the manifestations of politeness strategies in written discourse. The analysis centers on the various writing techniques and skills applied in presenting politeness at different levels of the structures of business recall statement, namely, at the word and expression level, the sentence level. Moreover, the conclusions of this dissertation may hopefully be of some help to those business English teachers in their teaching practice.
