Song dynasty was the developed period of the feudal society of our country. The civilization both for spiritual and material reached an unprecedented degree. Su Shi, as a leader literature, was also a literary giant during that generation. His appearance mixed with complex factors of policy, economic, cultural and his own destiny. His last half, especially his guilty caused by the "Wu Tai poem case", full of frustrations but actively attitude, made the complex, conflict, and comprehensive characters of his sole life experience.Some mistakes was there after so many years, the current 5 rolls edited by Zhao Kaimei, was taken as the pen jottings written by Su Shi. The 1~4 rolls was based on"non-action to go", described various contents but only few words. The 5th roll was his 13 articles, using the past to disparage the present, with the spirit of"promising to go". These show the value to find and describe Su Shi's literature character.This article is trying to describe his culture character from 3 points: one is that his main thought and action of Confucianism, carried along with some ideas from the Buddhism and the Taoism. Two is that his rational and perceptual thought and cognition, naturally mixed together, show his life status and that society he lived. And the last one is that his standpoint and understanding of people's livelihood. His ideas came from and rewarded back to the life of people, which made him the great imagination in the heart of people. There're also some description for his view of literature art, compare Dong Po Zhi Lin with his other part of his articles.With these, we could make quite a clear and full conclusion of Dongpo's cultural character by Dong Po Zhi Lin. And this show the value of this pen jottings.
