Being in the earlier stage of pictophonetic character and phonetic character, the borrowing character is in common use and plays important role in the history of character's development. There is a large number of borrowing character in Na-xi Dong-ba script. The borrowing character is commonly and flexibly used. Many scholars already pay attention to this phenomenon and carry on many studies on this field. But till now, no one has done a thorough study in this field. This article will give a thorough and comprehensive study on borrowing character in Na-xi Dong-ba script.This article is composed of six chapters, besides appendix.Chapter I expounds the definition and characteristic of borrowing character, explain the relationship between borrowing character and loan character, borrowing character and original character. There are three study styles of borrowing character, namely brief summarization, explanation and analysis. These studies make great success in material collection and theory conclusion, but still needs thorough and systematic study.The materials of this article include dictionary, Dong-ba scripture and practical documents. The study object is Dong-ba script, not the compound of scripts.While we determine which character is borrowed or not, we will concern of the culture background of Na-xi nationality. If there is some relationship between the meaning of borrowing and loan character, we don't regard it as borrowing character. The phonetic system in this article is come from the western dialect of Na-xi language.Chapter II is about the study on the borrowing character in dictionaries as follows: one is Rock's A Na-khi-English Encyclopedic Dictionary, another is LiLin-chan's Mo-so Hieroglyphics. From the angle of the number of borrowing word and style of explanation, the corresponding relationship of characters and words between borrowing and loan, the relationship between borrowing and original, the phonetic relationship between borrowing and loan, the meaning category between borrowing and loan, the types of forming the character of loan word, the achievement and insufficiency of studies on borrowing character in dictionaries.Borrowing characters in Rock's dictionary take the first place in all dictionaries. Borrowing characters in dictionaries can be divided into three types: (1) no originalcharacters; (2) original characters; (3) making original characters after the borrowing characters used. In these three types, original character is very common.According to the pronunciation, borrowing character in dictionaries can be divided into homonym and similarity. Most of the tone of borrowing character is quite different, while the initial consonant and vowel is most the same.The meaning of borrowing character is abstract, while the meaning of loan character is concrete. And the structures of loan character are picotgraph, self-expanatory, combined meaning. This phenomenon has relationship with the characteristic of Dong-ba script.Chapter HI is on the borrowing character in the Dong-ba scriptures, such as the Story of Flood in Mo-so Nationality and to the Dead for Love. Borrowing character in early period accounts 50 per cent, and in late period is 60 per cent. With the increase of borrowing character, character can be corresponding with the meaning of scriptures.Most of the borrowing characters are monosyllable. But some double syllable can also use one of the syllable to represent a monosyllable. Double syllable in Dong-ba script can represent another double syllable sharing the same pronunciation, while this phenomenon can't exist in other languages.The frequency of borrowing character in scripture is different, and already appears the tendency to use one character. Many borrowing characters appeared in Dong-ba scriptures sometimes are not collected in dictionaries.Chapter IV is on the borrowing character in practical documents.
