Known as a distinguished poet in Jian-an period, Cao Zhi, in the long practice of creation, put forward correlated theoretical advocations in literary criticism as an important component of literary thoughts and theoretical criticism of that time. Various literary thoughts are incarnated in his letters to Yang Dezu and Wu Jichong and his own creative activities, which is the tradition of Ancient poetics. The Letters to Yang Dezu and his literary works are the important data for researching on Cao Zhi's literary thoughts. On this basis, the thesis, composed of four chapters in addition to Introduction, thoroughly observe Cao Zhi's literary thoughts with reference to Cao Zhi's Proofreading and Notes as well as his related works.The Introduction is the status quo and existing questions. By summarizing the researches of Cao Zhi's literary thoughts in the past hundred years, the thesis aims to recall the previous research achievements, analyze the existing questions and make good preparations for further research.The first chapter discusses that Cao Zhi emphasizes the social function and value of literature from two aspects: CaoZhi's emphasis of the social function and value of literature and his recognition and emphasis of folk literatures.The second chapter explores Cao Zhi's literary thoughts embodied in his literary creation, including his creative trend of the magnificent and pessimistic passion, his emphasis on literary imagination in writing and the rhythm in poem creating.The third chapter mainly combs Cao Zhi'viewpoints about the prose poems and the Leiwen.And the fourth chapter chiefly analyzes Cao Zhi's viewpoints on literary criticism in The Letters to Yang Dezu and other works.Cao Zhi contributed a great deal to the arrival of the Age of the Conscious Literature, having great impact on the history of China's literary thoughts.
