In order to make a research on the ethnic relations in multi-ethnic countries, this thesis will focus on Mauritius as a case study. Many countries face chaos when people from different ethnicities, languages, and religions live together. However, Mauritius has succeeded in creating a stable and harmonious society since its independence in 1968. The government of Mauritius'multiculturalism mainly exists in the following two aspects:Firstly, the Government of Mauritius adheres to the principle of"multiculturalism", which is also called"unity in diversity"in practice. This principle recognizes the differences between ethnic groups and encourages cultural diversity by adopting effective political systems to protect the rights of minority groups. These systems allow the people of Mauritius to retain their ancestral culture and reduce conflicts between ethnic groups. However, the unilateral and excessive emphasis on ethnic differences threatens national unity. In Mauritius, most parties show a tolerant and cooperative spirit in political practices, and the country also makes efforts to enhance patriotism. This makes up for the shortcomings of"Multiculturalism", and facilitates the process of nation-building.Mauritius stands out as an example of a peaceful co-existing, socially harmonious and politically successful nation. Its experience can provide some historical reference to other multi-ethnic countries in dealing with ethnic relation crisis.
