The thesis gives a comparatively historical overview on Thoreau's thoughts on natural environment with the materialistic theory. It contains an introduction, the main body that runs in four chapters, a conclusion and a reference.In addition to indicating the previous research made by domestic and foreign academic circles, the preface introduces the academic value and practical significance of the thesis.Part one analyzes the writing background Thoreau's Walden, and the rationality and the prevision of Thoreau's thoughts on environment are also illustrated. Influenced by the anthropocentricity from the West, the American people conquered and controlled the nature. The concept and the action went through the Westward Movement, the nature was destroyed badly, with the land over exploited, tending to be desert.In part two, the thesis tends to discuss the reason why Thoreau wrote Walden, and how he was absorbed his thoughts on environment, demonstrating the process of forming Thoreau's idea from his life experience, the surrounding of Walden Pond and Emerson's influence .The paper points out when Thoreau saw the industrialization expand the pollution in his native place, he began to focus on and worry about the relationship between people and the nature. Illuminated by Emerson's transcendentalism, he lived by the pond simply, experiencing the reflection from his mentor and seeking the way of living in perfect harmony with the nature.There is the expatiating on Thoreau's thoughts on environment in part three. It begins with a simple living, which is the basic of Thoreau's thoughts. Then it sums up his thoughts on different topics, such as the in accord of man and nature, the value of the wilderness, the concept of relative ethic between them and the sense of diversity of life.Thoreau's thought is evaluated in part four first. First, it analyzes his contribution to both the American in environmental protection movement and the environmental ethic, and then the impact of his on the American theory and practice.With the analysis of our country on the current cultural transition, it is indicated in the epilogue that Thoreau's thoughts on environment may give us edification. It is positive and practical in our correct and scientific development, constructing the economical society on the course continually.
