A Correlative Research Between Disguise And Defense Mechanisms Of The Depressive Patients

The patients with depression have special defense mechanism which can beevaluated by DSQ. But these patients also have a certain extent of disguise; cause thepatients have some tendency while answering the questions. The degree of the disguisecan be known by the efficacy index including F-K in MMPI and the disguise factor inDSQ. The previous research indicated that this tendency might relate to the unconsciousdefense mechanism in the measuring course. The objection of the study is: (1) find outsome distinct defense mechanism in depressive patients and the correlation between thedisguise and the defense mechanism; (2) provide theoretic reference to psychopathology.In this research, we used MMPI and DSQ scales to assess 50 patients suffered fromdepression who had been diagnosed according to DSM-â…£. We also calculated thedifference of the incidence for depression between male and female through chi squaretest. Then we did correlation analysis to assess the relationship between the F-K inMMPI or disguise factor of DSQ and the defense mechanism assessed by DSQ. Finally,we did regression analysis, in which we set F-K in MMPI and the disguise factor in DSQas dependent variable (DV) and the defense mechanism assessed by DSQ as independentvariable (â…£). The results of this research are as follows:(1) There is no difference in defense mechanism between male and female.(2) The severity of depression is significantly related to the defense mechanism.(3)The assessments of the disguise by MMPI and DSQ are coherent.(3) According to the multiple regression analysis, 65.5% of malingering variationscores could be explained by projection, isolation, anticipation and sublimation variablesand 45% variation of correction scores could be explained by regression, repression andsublimation variables. 43% variation of depression scores could be explained by humorand somatization variables.(4) F-K factor is positively related with premature, median and wrapping factorswith statistical significance. Variation of F-K scores could be explained by projection,isolation and repression variables.Correlative research between disguise and defense mechanisms of the depressivepatients have shown certain degree of regression happened on these patients. The more regression, the more primitive defense mechanisms would be used, and the moreaggression to themselves. This may induce strong anger, disappointment, and poorlyself-sensation to themselves, which would aggravate the disease.
