Through the analysis of Solgenizin' s The building of cancer, this dissertation reveal the relationship between the novel and the critical realism in Russian literature in 19th century. The distinct characteristics of realism in Russian literature are authenticity and criticism, that is rethinking history and reviewing reality through the description of real life. The building of cancer describe the different sufferings of the hero Kostoglotov and his friend at the background of the author' s experience of cancer treating in Tashkent in 1955. The author depicts the real life of the Russian people at that time by focusing on the building of cancer, and reveals the essence of life. The building of cancer is the miniature of the society. At the same time, the author is a judge of history and moral, saying that cancer is lethal to human being as evil to social organ. The author conforms to the doctrine of critical realism in the aspect of theme choosing, character depiction and language style. There are also two aspects of innovation in this novel, one is the introduction of modernism ideas into the novel, such as the relationship between person and history, the consideration on ration, etc. The other innovation is the way of representation, such as free thinking, reverse of space-time, inner monologue, stream-of-consciousness, insight, metaphor and symbolism. This above made the novel more charming. All in all, this novel not only inherits the tradition of Russian classical literature, but also absorbs the art characteristics of modernism literature, so as to forms its own art style.
