Abnormal collocation,a special co-occurrence of lexical items, also a very complicated language phenomenon, has attracted much attention from linguists since Porzig's arguement for the recognition of the importance of syntagmatic relation early in the 1930s. Since abnormal collocation is mainly caused by the deviation in semantic collocation from norms of everyday language, it inevitably produces some special figures of speech. In the process of understanding abnormally collocational figures of speech, an analysis of reasons for the figures and the semantic relation between the collocates is called for in order to have a clear idea of how these figures are formed. In translation it is necessary to contrast English collocation with Chinese one since English and Chinese belong to different families and have their unique features. Considering the link between understanding and translating the abnormal collocational figures of speech, this paper aims at the following tasks: 1) find the connection between the abnormal collocation and the figures of speech and explore the reasons for the abnormally collocational figures of speech; 2) categorize the abnormally collocational figures of speech and analyze their features of semantic and grammatical collocations; 3) propose some translation techniques. Besides we devote the last chapter to overviewing the basic differences in collocational patterning and range between English and Chinese and provide some related solutions or strategies so as to make a further study of the factors which give rise to the discrepancy in collocation and improve the quality of Chinese translation. The task of this paper is to find out what is the most important basis of abnormal collocation and how the abnormally collocational figures of speech can be achieved through the collocation. It is hoped that the exploratory study of the abnormally collocational figures of speech in this paper will help promote the study of English figures of speech and contribute to the E-C rhetoric translation.
