The thesis deals with the speech act of Chinese criticism adopting both qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. First, the meaning and range of criticism speech act are defined. Secondly, statistics are used to analyze synchronically the adoption of the speech act of Chinese criticism, its pragmatic strategies, frequency and patterns. Thirdly, the social and cultural factors that affect the options of pragmatic strategies for Chinese criticism are analyzed chronically. Social factors play different roles in different contexts, which is determined by the rules guiding the Chinese relations. Generally, the relations between the subject and object in communication are decided by social power and gender role, with social power having greater effect; whereas in China, which is a patriarchal society, gender role is more important than social power in private situations. Cultural factors include the sense of hierarchy, moral concepts, gender role. Finally a conclusion was arrived at.
