The thesis deals with the speech act of Chinese criticism, starting from the problems encountered by foreign students studying in China and adopting both qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. First, the meaning and range of speech act of criticism are defined. Secondly, statistics are used for the first time to analyze synchronically the adoption of the speech act of Chinese criticism, its pragmatic strategies, frequency and patterns. Thirdly, the social and cultural factors that affect the options of pragmatic strategies for Chinese criticism are analyzed chronically.?Social factors play different roles in different contexts, which is determined by the rules guiding the Chinese relations. Generally, the relations between the subject and object in communication are decided by social power and social distance, with social power having greater effect; whereas in China, which is a patriarchal society, social distance is more important than social power in private situations.(2)Cultural factors, including the sense of hierarchy, moral concepts, outlook on life and ideas of politeness and face, are also dealt with. Fourthly, the adoption of Chinese criticism by foreign students studying Chinese are investigated by means of questionnaire and compared with the applications by native Chinese. Based on the investigation and comparison, the thesis provides methods of teaching Chinese criticism to foreigners.
