There are various images in Hai Zi's poems, especially the"corn field"and the"sun". Around the"corn field"are such images as"field, river, village"and so on, which form a steady series, pointing directly at the poet's life experience in the countryside and constructing the rural China in poetry. Being homesick is one of the foundation topics in his works. Countryside is the headspring of the poet's inspiration and his mother in spirit. The villages in his writings are beautiful as poetry, with everything including the mountains and rivers having its spiritualism. So he creates an unpretending and deiform countryside world, which is the Utopia in writer's heart. When Hai Zi's dream of returning home is dashed to the ground, countryside in his poems becomes bleak. The"sun"image represents the poet's lofty spiritual pursuit which is saving the lost human being with poetry. The poet fancies to create a kind of great poetry which could surpass both female parent (the earth) and the male parent (the sun). This is undoubtedly great humanity---something of the character of poetry. However, the ideal is doomed to fail in tragedy. In fact, the goal is so high and hard to achieve, once the goal is destroyed the poet is stuck in deeper despair. The resolved way that poet insists on confronting despair makes himself suffer a lot and be heartbroken. From the"corn field"and the"sun", Hai Zi is on a hard and painful way. He successfully walked into the parade of great poets writing poems about life by overcoming the narrowness of a lyricist. Hai Zi contemplates the meaning of living and cares about the state of human's life with pity. His pursuit in poetry provides an attitude and way for us to face the universe and life, when attempting to create contemporary poems.
