The Study On Jiang

The thesis concentrates on Jiang(将), which is a word with various semantic features and functions in the angles of ancient Chinese. Jiang was originally used as a verb. Later, after a long history'evolution, Jiang can also be a preposition, conjunction, auxiliary etc. And the semantic features and functions of Jiang were complex. As a preposition, Jiang can form the disposal structure, introduce the instrumental construction, or express the meaning of concomitancy. This thesis considers that the Jiang which can form the disposal structure and introduce the instrumental construction were grammaticalized from the verb Jiang that meant Chi (持)or Na(拿), and the Jiang which can express the meaning of concomitancy was grammaticalized from the verb Jiang that meant Shuailing(率领) or Dailing(带领). Jiang which was a conjunction was further grammaticalized from the preposition Jiang that express the meaning of concomitancy. The auxiliary Jiang was grammaticalized from the verb Jiang that meant Xiedai(携带) or Yinling(引领). The construction of the serial verb construction is the reason of verb Jiang grammaticalization. The base and precondition of the grammaticalization were the verb Jiang came into the serial verb construction. Jiang'grammaticalization is contacted with the meaning of the verb. The different syntaxes came from the same meaning of Jiang, which is the reflection of the divergent transformation. This thesis studys the different functions and usages of Jiang, sees about their relation, and tries to draw comprehensive depiction and explanation.
