Fu Donghua's Translation Of Gone With The Wind Revisited Based On Lefevere's Rewriting Theory

Translation, in the light of Andre Lefevere's rewriting theory, is not a simple reproduction of a text equivalent to the original, but rather a form of rewriting, influenced and constrained by mainly three factors, ideology, poetics and patronage. Based on Lefevere's rewriting theory, this thesis revisits Fu Donghua's translation of Gone with the Wind by relocating it in the socio-cultural context of that particular historical period. After a careful examination on the correlation between Fu's decision-making in translation and the socio-cultural environment, it can be seen that Fu's translation strategy is largely influenced by various factors exerted by ideology, poetics and patronage of the time. The purpose of the study is to reveal the fact that translation is not merely an act completed by translator's personal preference, but an act constrained by various forces from ideology, poetics and patronage in the overall environment.
