A Research On The Personality Of LiuYuxi From His Poems And Articles

Liu Yuxi is an outstanding poet in middle Tang dynasty and is also a progressive thinker and stateman. He lived in the degenerating period of Tang dynasty and experienced the sharp and conplicated social conflicts and political crisis. By the time of "Yongzhen reform", Liu took a positive attitude towards his offical career and hoped he could make accomplishment. The reform gave him a hard strike. He was demoted to the remoted area and that began his life of demotion. Living in plight, Liu depressed and perplexed, but never gave up his ideal.This thesis tries to understand his personality by researching his works. To put it simple, demotion reduced Liu Yuxi into the plight of his life, but built his personality and influenced his composition of poems. This thesis will integrate Liu Yuxi's life experience and his demotion and analyze Liu Yuxi's personality from three aspects.In the first part, the author will examine the preliminary formation of Liu Yuxi's personality and the causes of demotion. The author thinks that the education he received in his youth have great positive effects on his later brilliant talent and the preliminary formation of his personality. Liu lived in a time with sufferings; the revival of the Li's family and the expectation of peaceful life is the demand of that time and the typical mentality of official interlectuals. The strong sense of suffering sense inspired official interlectuals of mission and responsibilty and the reality offered them opportunities to realize their ambitions.Liu lived in such a time that he expected to make accomplishments and thus he took active part in "Yongzhen reform". However, the outcome turned out against his hope. The demotion after the reform last for about a couple of decades and had great influence on his personality.In the second part, the author will analyze Liu's personal characteristics in plight. The depressing official career offered him much experience of sorrow, suffering, and resentment. Unlike the other demoted interlectuals , Liu Zongyuan, for instance, Liu showed outstanding personal characteristics in dire plight, which made up of the essential part of his personality.In the third part, the author will discuss the self-adjusting factors in Liu's personality. From the psychological perspective, self-adjustment is the titiary level of personality connotation. This system include self-evaluation, self-experience and self-control and so on. Self control or the self-adjustment system is to balance the difference between self-evaluation and self-experience and avoid psychopathic personality caused by the big difference between these two factors. Through analyses and comparison, the author is to reach the conclusion that it is the strong capability of self-adjustment that keeps Liu Yuxi's normal personality and balanced mentality.
