In recent years, the study of news reporting has been a hot topic in discourse analysis. With so many unique features and linguistic phenomenon, news discourse as a special style is worth studying. At the same time, Systemic-Functional Grammar provides an efficient approach for discourse analysis. This thesis is designed to study the stylistic features of hard news in English newspaper from the perspective of Systemic-Functional Grammar. A hard news corpus is built, in which all the news materials are downloaded from the official web site of The New York Times. And 12 news texts are selected as samples for manual studies. Around the three metafunctions (ideational, interpersonal and textual), a detailed analysis is given to the choices of linguistic elements at the lexico-grammatical level, such as transitivity and voice, mood and modality, theme structure and thematic progression, as well as graphology. Furthermore, it explains how the three variables of the context of situation (field, tenor and mode) limit and motivate the functional components in the semantics. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches are adopted to analyze the data. This study has high theoretical significance as well as practical value. It reveals that Systemic-Functional Grammar can certainly become the framework for discourse analysis. It may help enrich the application of SFG in journalistic English. Besides, it is also significant to the teaching and learning of English.
