A Study Of Economic News Headline Based On Systemic Functional Grammar

The study of news discourse from the perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar has attracted wide attention.Headlines are usually the most important elements of a news report,which have the function of leading outline and attracting the audience.As a kind of news headlines,economic news headlines are more closely related to human society and an important reflection of a country's comprehensive national strength.Therefore,this paper will study economic news headlines.Systemic Functional Grammar?SFG?,as an applicable linguistics,has been widely used in foreign language teaching since 1980s.This paper chooses 45 headlines about the United States from January 7^th,2017 to June 24^th,2017 as the research object.Based on the Halliday's conceptual and interpersonal functions,this paper uses qualitative research methods to reveal the ideology behind the headlines and the stylistic features in terms of vocabulary choice,transitivity and modality.The transitivity system of conceptual function includes six processes:material process,psychological process,relational process,behavioral process,speech process and existential process.News headlines are categorized according to six processes,and the proportion of them is considered.In addition,interpersonal function refers to the speaker's attitude and evaluation of relevant phenomena in order to establish a relationship between the speaker and the listener.Modality reflects the speaker's attitude toward things,indirectly shows the social distance and power relationship between the speaker and the receiver,thus reflecting his position.This paper studies the economic news headlines from the aspect of modality system.Firstly,the research shows that in the six processes,the material process and the relational process account for the highest proportion,followed by the speech process and the study of modal system in modal form shows that the attitude and views of the news sender are dominated by certain cultural background and ideology when transmitting information.Secondly,stylistic features serve ideology,and news headlines show certain stylistic features so that the audience can understand the ideology behind them.The author hopes that this study can give more support to English news practitioners in China and provide practical theoretical guidance for the development of English news report in China.In addition,it is hoped that this paper can provide enlightenment and help for Chinese English learners in reading news reports so that they can better understand the meaning of news headlines and continue to make greater contributions to the industry.
