Emotion is an indispensable semantic field in the research of the whole vocabulary and anger is one of the most basic emotions. People are not only able to feel emotions psychologically but also to express emotions and language is crucial in the study of emotion.This thesis aims at giving the vocabulary and expressions of ANGER a comprehensive summary and drawing a list of "anger" vocabulary which is amiable to learners. It is a contrastive analysis on the vocabulary of "anger" in Chinese and English.This study is under the guidance of Cognitive Lexicography which is a new sub-branch of Cognitive Linguistics. It adopts Edda Weigand's contrastive model for analyzing emotion and George Lakoff's metaphorical analysis.The framework of the thesis runs as follow: The first section is the introduction, which introduces the scope of the study and the goal of this thesis as well as the contribution to be done. In section two, the theories used in the analysis and their characteristics are presented. The theories include the cognitive approach to lexicography, model for analyzing emotion and the metaphorical approach to analyzing emotion. In section three, the words which have the meaning of ANGER are examined. This is followed by the analysis of ANGER vocabulary. The analysis of figurative ANGER from a metaphorical standpoint is presented in the fourth section. And the fifth part goes on with the analysis of ANGER vocabulary as a whole. This paper finally gives out the list of "anger" words-in-use classified by their ways-of-use. The concluding remarks are presented in section six.The analysis in this paper is the first step in compiling a dictionary based on ways-of-use of the words. The list of "anger" words given in this paper will contribute to the great work of compiling a cognitive learner's dictionary.
