As a functional type of writing style, English for Science and Technology is developed on the basis of General English. In the long process of the development, EST has evolved features of its own in style, vocabulary and linguistic rules. As far as EST is concerned, verbs play an important part in the certain style and express people's various experiences in the real world. Therefore, many scholars make an attempt to use the functional grammar to analyze EST. However, it is still not enough for the combination of the functional grammar and verbs in EST.This thesis makes a tentative endeavor to apply the theories of the Systemic-Functional Grammar to the analysis of verbs in EST, hoping to prove that the theories of SFG can be used to analyze verbs of EST effectively. Based on the theory of metafunction in systemic-functional grammar, the paper studies the verbs deeply, in order to realize the genre characteristics and verb function in EST. It also aims at analyzing the relation between the material metafunction and verbs in scientific texts through examples. To address the topic, the author analyzes many EST paragraphs in detail to demonstrate the transitivity and voice, particularly applies the material and relational process to the verb analysis in EST discourse. The research is to improve the accuracy of EST style and enhance the sensitivity of EST learners, which contribute to reveal the implied ideological significance in discourse and ultimately lay a solid foundation for application and translation of EST.
