Huai Yi(淮夷), an ancient tribe in Shang and Zhou dynasty of China, had great influence at that time. The former scholars believed that the battles between Zhou imperial troops and Huai Yi mainly took place in the Huai River basin(淮河), but the inscriptions on the bronze vessels which were found recently, such as Zuo Bo Ding(柞伯鼎),etc. prove that those battles also happened in the east of China(东国). The fact lies in the following factors: the Zuo Bo Ding's inscription about Duke Zhou(周公)'s conquering the south of China(南国), maybe refers to Duke Zhou's conquering Huai Yi, not relevant to Chu(楚)or other states in Jiang Han (江汉)river areas; the Ban Gui(班簋)'s inscription"Dong Guo Juan Rong"(东国戎)is Huai Yi, and its content can be linked with the three bronze vessel about Bo Dong(伯三器); the five year Shi Shi Gui (五年师簋)'s inscription"Xiu Zhui Yu Qi"("羞追于齐"),indicates the fact Zhou Imperial troops conquered Huai Yi in Qi state in the reign of King Yi (夷王)of Western Zhou dynasty; conquering the place Hun(昏)in the Zuo Bo Ding's inscription and conquering the place Xun( )in the inscription of Jin Hou Su Bian Zhong(晋侯苏编钟), are both the battle between Zhou imperial troops and Huai Yi.What's more, the inscriptions about the south of China, can be divided into two categories------some of them indicating the Jiang Han river areas in King Zhao(昭王)of Western Zhou dynasty, the others refering to the Huai river areas in the battle- conquering Huai Yi . This division can provide a new angle to the controversial study on the relationship between Nan Yi(南夷)and Nan Huai Yi(南淮夷), which reflects the ebb and flow between Zhou imperial troops and Chu.
