More than twenty years have passed since the full-length English translation of The Story of the Stone publishied. There are a lot of studies have done on this book. The refering aspects have almost contain all the sections of the book, the same to the studies on the idioms in this English version. But the studies on the idioms are mostly focusing on the tecniches of translation. There are little aticles which have made studies based on the text itself, and reserching the cultural contents which have drained away.This dissertation takes the David Hawkes's vertion as an exemple, in order to study the idioms in the vertion of this works. Focusing on the translation of the idioms, conbining the novel itself, this dessertation tries to find out the content which has drained away just according to the text in the novel, especially the contents which drained away between the lines. This dissertation also tries to find some rules behind the idioms' translation, in otder to aviod such problems happened again and again, also in the hope of putting forward some advices for the later translators. If this dissertation has any useful conclusion, it will be a meaningful page.There are four parts in this dissertation. The first part is to summerize the content which will be referred in this dissertation. The second and the third part is to analysis the concrete instances chosen from the novel. The fourth part is the summerizing of the whole text.In the first part, the dissertation relates the current situation of this studying area and some relating parts which should be made clear before the major content begins. In the second part, it focuses on the analysis of some examples, comparing the original text and the meanig after the translation, in order to find out the content which has drained away and tries to search the rules behind the translation which could help the translation become more perfect. In the third part, the dissertation shares some successful examples from this vertion. From the analysis, we can get some successful experiences of the translator. In the fourth part, this dissertation summerizes all the analysis of the examples in this paper. From studying the translator and his version, we can get the conclusion about the methods of translating the Chinese novels. The author also hope this dissertation can help other translators who will do the work of translating The Story of the Stone, and help the later version more and more perfect.
