In the Chinese modern literary history, Ding Ling and Yang Jiang, who were the contemporaries, were very representative, although the former was a writer of mainstream literature, while the latter was a marginal one. They belonged to totally different literary camps, and their characteristics, pursuit for literature, and their literary creation were also totally different. From the angle of "the unity of being human and literary creation", this paper aims to make a further study on Ding Ling and Yang Jiang by comparison. The influence of the different characteristics and psychological state upon their own life and literary creation will be the focus of the comparison, based on which, the psychological state of Chinese intellectuals will be discussed. At the same time, an overview of Chinese modern literature will be presented through the comparison. There are four parts in this paper, namely Introduction, Chapter I, Chapter II, and Conclusion. Two issues will be involved in the Introduction part. First, the contemporary research on Ding Ling and Yang Jiang: Many individual researches on the two writers have been done, but the comparative research on them does not attract much attention yet. Second, the possibility of the comparative study on the two writers: that is, from the angle of "the unity of being human and literary creation", a comparison on their own characteristics and literary creation of the two writers will be made.In Chapter I, entitled Being Human, the characteristics of the two writers will be analyzed. It is divided into four sections. First, different family environments shaped different characteristics. Ding Ling was optimistic and steadfast, while Yang Jiang was tender and independent. Second, growing experience. Ding Ling became a passionate idealist because of the May 4th spirit, while Yang Jiang was rational and sane. Third, reality and attitude towards life. And Yang Jiang stayed far away from politics due to her philanthropy and independence. Through the comparison, the psychological state of Chinese intellectuals will be discussed. Fourth, this section will be a summary of the characteristics of these two writers.Chapter II, entitled Literary Creation, is in general parallel with the first chapter, in which the feeling and thoughts of the writers, as well as the developing trend and basic characteristics of Chinese modern literature will be presented. In this chapter, the literary works by Ding Ling and Yang Jiang will be analyzed. This chapter is also divided into four sections. First, the differences between Ding Ling's "modern consciousness" and Yang Jiang's "secular stories" will be analyzed according to their own works. Third, the image of Du Wanxiang created by Ding Ling and the image of Yao Mi created by Yang Jiang are the reflection of different life realm of the two writers.
