PrefaceSuicide is one of the important causes of human death. Suicide attempters are among the most dangerous people of suicide death and suicide attempt is an important risk factor for suicide. Social support is an important intermediary variable which impact the results of stress response, which has a role in reducing the stress response. The low level of social support can not let the social support system play a full role in buffering stress in order to avoid the individual from suicidal ideas or even suicide after negative life events occur. Few studies about suicide attempts at home and abroad comes from the emergency room of general hospitals, where more first-hand access to accurate information. This study attempts to explore the intrinsic link between the social support and suicide of the suicide attempters from city's emergency room of general hospitals. Through the social support rating scale,we analysed the social support level of suicide attempters, and explored how the factors related to the social support behind the phenomenon of suicide might impact the social support, and eventually impacted suicidal behaviour.MethodsThis study investigated 239 suicide attempters from the emergency room of general hospitals, and gathered the demography with suicide related information from them.Meanwhile,we did the eveluation using the Social Support Ranking Scale and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression etc.and made the psychiatry diagnosis using the SCID.The material from this research is skewness distribution material(P< 0.01) and the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Wilcoxon test and the Spearman rank correlation analysis are used.Results1.The social support condition of the suicide attempted crowd from the city general hospital's emergency room is lower than the normal crowd obviously;2.Major social support differences among different demography materials and the suicide correlated informations are found in the suicide attempters;3.The total scores between the HAMD and the SSRS have the correlation coefficient -0.287(P<0.01), and -0.236(P<0.01) for subjective support scores,-0.233 (P<0.01) for objective support scores;4.The total scores of social support and the scores of the use of social support in suicidal ideas group are significantly lower than non-suicidal ideas group.DiscussionThe results of this study show a negative correlation between HAMD scores and the total scores of social support rating scale, the subjective scores while not related with the objective support scores. These can show the relationship between the degree of depression and social support for patients:worse the social support, poorer performance the depression shows. The poor social support is mainly embodied in the subjective scores and the use of the social support, which can indicate there is no significant relationship between the objective social support and depression. These can also suggest that the depressed patients have the worse subjective experience, and are more inclined to think that they are less concerned by people, and they are reluctant to seek the help from others. Maybe because these people are suffering from different types of depression. So they are not good at using the surrounding social support system, therefore can not make a use of social support system by buffering the stress to avoid the suicide idea thereby avoid the occurrence of suicide. People who have suicidal ideas are more inclined to release the long-term pain, and seriously considered ending their lives. This group shows low social support, mainly because they are less good at using the social support system. Those who without the ideas of suicide threaten others, retaliate, seek attention by hurting theirselves. They show less psychiatric diagnosis, more common in impulsive suicide. This group does not really want to end their lives, which is younger, and does not have serious symptoms of depression, and often sends a signal to others to achieve their purpose through such extreme means.ConclusionSuicide attempted patients' social support condition has the close relationship with the degree of depression. The more serious depression the patients experience, the worse the social support is,and the worse they use their social support resources. So,they are unable to let the social support display the stress buffering function well, thus prevent the occurrence of suicide behavior.
