The novel and the period lived in the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20* century during the whole period of capitalist civilization. During this period, belief and behavior, knowledge and life, man and woman, man and religion, man and society, man and nature were all in a state of antagonism and split. First there came the separation of belief and behavior. In this state, life was consisted of two opposing worlds. One was Sunday religion world consisted of mysterious stories. The other was everyday behavior world consisted of training, obligation, bills and reports. The separation between belief and behavior, religion and life resulted in separation of human mind and body.In D. H. Lawrence's work especially in The Rainbow we can see that the harmony and unity of man and nature. Mind and body are a crucial important theme in Lawrence's novel. Lawrence thought mind and body were separate. As first of all, body is the most important component of life. Without body, man cannot exist as a living creature. Second, body exists for perfect happiness. Nature endows it the property of happiness. Only when mind despises and fears for body or when body hates and resists mind does defilement exist. Lawrence thought only when mind and body, sex and beauty are in harmony can true love exist. This is Lawrence's double theme on love. Actually, perfect love should be a unity of worldly love and immaterial love. Only trying to satisfy worldly love may lead to endless emptiness while only sacred brotherly love may bring on decay of emotion in life and wither of beauty within sexual relationship. Only when mind and body inosculate, will man's true love come true.An Archetypal Analysis of the Structures and Images in The Rainbow: As an author, Lawrence is deeply influenced by The Bible.
