"Default" is a quite common phenomenon in language use. "Experience Default", which the paper studies, means to pre-assume the receiver's intention based on shared background knowledge and pragmatic presupposition, thus increasing the communication efficiency.By reviewing the previous studies on default and default translation, we find that the previous studies attribute default of various kinds to cultural default, and a fine division of default should be made. The thesis divides default into three categories, namely social-cultural default, situational default and linguistic default. Due to the intrinsic characteristic of translation, it is of necessity to study default from the source text aspect and the translation aspect respectively. As the research of adopting experience default in translation is rare in the previous study but it is a phenomenon that demands attention, the thesis holds that studying this translation strategy is of great significance to the study of translation practice.Owing to the dynamic features of translation in terms of cognition and relevance, relevance theory has a powerful explanatory power as regards translation. Relevance theory sees communication as an ostensive-inferential process; translation is by nature the same as communication. In the process of encoding/decoding, relevance plays a vital role, determining the selections of relevant factors such as information and form. The thesis adopts the Noble Prize winner Toni Morrison's masterpiece Beloved as an example to study the experience default using in the source text and Wang Youxuan, Pan Yue and Lei Ge's Chinese versions to study the (experience) default adopted in translations. As the source text and target text readers are from different cultures, default in the original text may be brought out while some clearly expressed messages may be omitted if they are known to the target readers. Different cognitive foundations between nations and races are the basis for experience default.
