There has been lot of research works and papers on Xiao Qian's novels, which mainly contains three aspects: the research on Xiao Qian's literal school identity according to his novels, the research on the artistic uniqueness of Xiao Qian's novels, and the research on Xiao Qian's novels from the perspective of overall consideration. However, the tragic consciousness reflected by Xiao Qian's novels has not been fully covered. Some researchers have discussed the tragic consciousness, but the research is very shallow and incomplete. The hardship of actual life leads to lots of tragedies. Xiao Qian was born from a poor family, he had a poor and homeless life in his early years, he was beaten for inability to pay private school tuition fees and his mother worked as a servant to others. Such experiences had brought him spiritual insult. When he first got wage by study-work in carpet factory and happily got home, he witnessed his mother's death with his own eyes... These contingent and necessary unfortunate sufferings made Xiao Qian inherit intellectuals' historical duty and responsibility of Beijing School Writers and China's traditional culture. Xiao Qian, has made a deep and serious thinking on national history, current situation and the future from the perspective of a popularized humanitarian care, with his eyes on the man on the field. The novels are dealing with their life, fate and spirit, full of modern intellectuals' deep humanitarian mood and silent sympathy, which has made the tragic consciousness in the novels incorporated into more sympathy towards working people's difficulties of life and calling for and protection of simple, kind and energetic life. The novels also expressed his deep sympathy and love to the down-class people and exposed that the individual can't grasp his own fate under the oppressions of life and time. These novels that expressed life's sufferings, even the destruction of life, reflected the unique tragic consciousness contained in Xiao Qian's novels. Just for the strong tragic complex, the writer managed to demonstrate the tragic spirit contained in the conflicts between ideal and reality, tradition and modernism. The power of life sparkles in the struggles against sufferings, while in the process of maintaining one's own life's freedom and existence, the individual's life value can't be realized. In the spiritual world of Xiao Qian, the western religious culture has formed a pair of contradictions that brought double impacts upon him. On the one hand, he supported equality, freedom and fraternity of western religion and internalized them into his own cultural personality to some extent; religious imaginary ideal world gave him some spirit consoling to his lonely childhood where he looked for some sustenance for his spirit to comfort his lonely and sad life. On the other hand, western colonialists made use of religion to invade upon China's culture, politics, which he severely criticized. As to religion, Xiao Qian has moved from direct observation to criticism in politics and society, which formed the base for the series of works to criticize Christian. However, both from criticizing the explicit functions of religion and recognition of cultural value, expressed his care for common people's difficulties of life and the sympathy towards working people, which made his novels full of strong tragic consciousness. The sad sufferings and experience in his childhood have made him choose a child narrative perspective in his novel creation, which made his novels full of sufferings, tears and tragedies, making the readers feel loneliness and sorrow. At the same time, the narrative contents of Xiao Qian's novels are characterized by poetic features, with thinking and mood as the expression of content, the impressionistic as the unique aesthetic objective. He made full use of creation of artistic conception and rendering of mood atmosphere to render his novels' tragic mood from narrative perspective and tragic consciousness, so that the tragedies are artistically demonstrated.
