Liuyang gained the name for it's government was located in the north bank of Liuyang river, the song of Liuyang river made it even more popular. Three mountains of Dawei Jiuling and Lianyun are the natural barrier of the land; three rivers of Liuyang Laodao and Nanchuan cut through the territory to flow into the Xiangjiang River. Liuyang is located between Hunan province and Jiangxi province. Liuyang, which has important geographical environment and profound cultural deposition, is famous "red holy" and "fireworks production base". This article involves the study about the development of the modern city of Liuyang only because of space. This paper has two parts.The first part uses era as a horizontal line to discuss the development of the city of Liuyang. The set up of Liuyang county has the 1798-years history. After slow development in ancient times, the city of Liuyang developed further during the Kangqian period in Qing Dynasty. It had been achieved unprecedented prosperity in the period of the Republic of China and completed the turnaround from ancient to modern gradually, but stopped and then sunk into the declination during the War of Anti-Japanese and the War of Liberation.The second part uses urban culture as a vertical line to discuss the cultural meaning of modern city of Liuyang, including urban geography and ecology, urban industry and commerce, urban system culture, urban ideological formation, urban plan and construction and folk custom culture.The viewpoint of this paper is based on the thoroughly data and the on-the-spot investigation, which the usage of pictures and diagrams make the article more intuitionistic and visual.
