Among the female writers during the 20s of last century, Ding Ling is no mean master. At the three decades from the 20s to 40s, not many are successful writers while she is among the few. The themes of her writing range from city to countryside, from woman to man, from the nothingness of individualism to the sincere pursuit of revolution while the hero's ranks, journey of life and thoughts and emotions change a lot. It is a great regret for writers and readers and the history that only four volumes of novels are included in the 12-volume The Works of Ding Ling, and that such novels as Mother and The Cold Days haven't finished due to the times and the background then. During the three decades, her opinions and emotions towards men were changing as the ranks of men were changing with the development of the history. We can see in her works there are three peaks when the images of men changed obviously. The first period is the early time of her writing, at the period from the publishment of Dream to 1930s after when Defend was published. The novels then were about heroines and analyzed the vanity and emptiness of the men's mind and their frantic pursuit of city ladies who are the main force and after the May 4th Movement. The second period is the during the left-wing revolution, when Defend and Shanghais in the 1930 spring the first volume and Shanghais in the 1930 spring the second volume are the representatives. Men in these novels are of revolutionary aspiration and firm revolution belief and they thought of the society more than its inhabitants in the new tide of the age. But their masculine authority could not be concealed under the disguise of revolution.Speech is about the men in her early novels. During the third period in Yan'an, Ding Ling were seeking the proper subject and character and her writing approaching her own goal. In this essay only The Event in the North Village in 1937 and The Days When I Was in Xia Village in 1940 and The Night in 1941 are analyzed. In these novels, the writer focused on the process of the awareness and self-overcome in the minds of the working class and peasantry, which showed the strong will and the hard work of the proletariat. But in her writing the lagged customs of the men and their feudal masculine authority ruining the women in the freed area were criticized.
