Reading is the major goal and at the same time the most important means in language learning. It is also a major part of College English teaching, and plays an important role in developing students' English proficiencyReading strategies refer to strategies used by language learners aiming to improve their comprehension, such as inferencing, predicting, and evaluating. Researches on reading strategies are of great importance in language learning as well as in language teaching.Researches on this field began in western countries, and most studies were under the background that English was learned as the second language. In China, however, where English is learned as a foreign language, the researches are relatively few, and most of them were carried out with English majors. The present study intends to investigate the application of reading strategies among college students and its direct influence on their reading performance through quantitative research. The survey instruments in this study are the questionnaires produced by Oxford (1990) and two reading comprehension tests (pre-test, post-test). The SPSS is employed to analyze data. There are three major findings in the study: I)Strategies can be taught; 2)Strategy training can be carried out in the normal classroom teaching; 3) Students' reading performance can be improved through reading strategy training. These findings help to prove that reading strategies have a positive correlation with reading performances. For teachers, these findings might help to reinforce their confidence that developing the students' strategic awareness is useful for promoting success in English study.
