Vocabulary learning is very significant in second language learning. Because it is the foundation of foreign language learning and it is also the prerequisite for the improvement of other language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. Rivers (1983) has pointed out that the acquisition of an adequate vocabulary is essential for successful second language use because without an extensive Vocabulary, we will not be able to use the structures and functions we have learned for comprehensible communication. Vocabulary learning and teaching has gone through a long history of development in EFL teaching. How to improve the acquisition efficiency has long been the focus of vocabulary teaching. Unfortunately, whenever people , in the past or even at present time, refer to vocabulary, they mean solely reading vocabulary. Listening vocabulary has long been ignored completely until recently people began to realize the great importance of it and to pay attention to it. listening vocabulary plays a vital role in the improvement of students' listening abilities, the students always complain that their listening can not make a breakthrough mainly because of the lack of listening vocabulary. In what way can they learn and retain a word has always been their pursuit in vocabulary learning. This paper tries to testify which way of input (reading input, listening input and the combination of reading and listening inputs) is the effective approach in listening vocabulary acquisition and listening vocabulary comprehension. The results in the study show that listening input outperformed significantly reading input in terms of listening vocabulary acquisition especially in pronunciation which conforms to the first hypothesis in the study. While the combination of reading and listening inputs did the best in listening vocabulary acquisition and in listening comprehension. Thus it is the best way to enlarge students listening vocabulary and to improve their listening ability. Through the experiment, we also found that reading vocabulary could be turned into listening vocabulary by constant listening practice.
