A Study Of Liang Shiqiu As A Translator

This paper is a study of Liang Shiqiu as a translator. Specifically it examines his contribution to Chinese literature and Chinese translation literature by examining both his translation theory and practice.The whole paper consists of five chapters. Chapter I is an introduction, which includes a brief outline of my paper, the objectives and scope of my study, as well as the rationale of the research. Chapter II is a literary review. Chapter III and chapter IV are the focus of my thesis. Chapter III is a detailed illustration of Liang's translation theory as illustrated by his debate with Lu Xun in the 1920s and 1930s. Chapter IV is a study of Liang's main translation strategy which illustrates his translation theory and is illustrated by a case study of his translation of the complete works of Shakespeare as compared with Zhu Shenghao's version. It is found that, in terms of translation theory, Liang adheres to the following principles: (a) the unification of faithfulness and fluency; (b).the use of literal translation as his dominant method of translation; and (c) the use of abundant annotations and prefaces or forewords to the original texts. Chapter V discusses Liang's status in translation and modern Chinese literature. It is pointed out that his main contribution lies in the fact that he was the first translator to translate the complete works of Shakespeare and his translation works have become an efficient tool for scholars and experts on Shakespeare in their research work.
